Emmy-winning FPV and drone cinematography in Ukraine for CNN, filmed by FPV pilot and drone cinematographer Lewis Whyld during the Russian invasion. Working in an active conflict environment, the assignment combined specialist FPV flying with conventional aerial cinematography to document the scale, movement and impact of the war from perspectives that were difficult or impossible to achieve from the ground. FPV & Drone Cinematography in an Active Conflict Environment
Filming in Ukraine required a very different approach from commercial or controlled-location FPV work. Routes, launch points and operating windows had to be assessed against rapidly changing security conditions, with the safety of the team taking priority over any shot.
For the FPV work I used Whyldthings Moonshot, giving me a compact, lightweight platform with the endurance and control needed to capture longer continuous sequences while keeping the aircraft adaptable to the environment. Conventional drones were used alongside FPV when wider aerial context was needed.
The aim was to use aerial cinematography as part of the journalism rather than simply create dramatic imagery — helping CNN show the scale of events, the geography of locations and the impact of the conflict from perspectives that could not be understood as clearly from the ground.
That work ultimately formed part of CNN’s coverage for which I was named as an Emmy winner for Outstanding Live Breaking News Coverage.

Specialist FPV for Hostile & High-Risk Environments
The Ukraine assignment sits within a wider body of FPV and drone work in hostile, remote and technically demanding environments, where operational judgement matters as much as flying skill.
I have used specialist drone systems in active conflict zones, volcanic eruptions, Arctic conditions, disaster areas and other locations where weather, access, security and infrastructure can change rapidly. In those environments, the aircraft and flight plan have to be adapted around the realities on the ground rather than a fixed production setup.
For productions working in high-risk locations, that experience means combining cinematic ambition with conservative decision-making, reliable equipment and a clear understanding of when conditions make a shot inappropriate. In Ukraine, FPV and conventional drones were tools for reporting first — used to add context, scale and perspective while operating within the constraints of an active war zone.
