Flying Drones Underground Without GPS

Crossrail required a very different flying technique from conventional outdoor drone cinematography. Inside the tunnel network there was no reliable satellite positioning, so the aircraft could not depend on GPS-assisted stability or automated position holding.
Lewis flew manually within the tunnel environment, using visual reference, aircraft response and careful route planning to maintain control around walls, services and construction infrastructure.
The confined geometry also meant there was little room to correct a poor line once a flight had begun. Routes had to be planned around the available space, with recovery options considered before take-off and the aircraft kept within a controllable envelope throughout.
The result was aerial footage that could move through the tunnel rather than simply observe it from a fixed position, giving CNN a clearer sense of the scale and engineering of Crossrail beneath London.
