The assignment built on Lewis Whyld’s early use of drones for international breaking-news coverage, using aerial perspectives to reveal patterns of damage and geography that were difficult to understand from ground level alone. In a disaster environment where roads, buildings and infrastructure had been heavily affected, the drone provided a fast and flexible way to establish scale without relying on larger aviation assets.
Operating in post-earthquake conditions required careful judgement around unstable structures, emergency activity, affected communities and limited recovery options. The aircraft had to remain simple to deploy and controllable in environments where the priorities of rescue teams, local authorities and residents came before the needs of the camera.

Operating in the Aftermath of a Major Earthquake

Post-earthquake Nepal presented an environment where normal assumptions about access, infrastructure and recovery could not be relied upon. Roads and buildings had been damaged, emergency activity was ongoing and many locations remained physically unstable.
Drone flights therefore had to be planned around the condition of the ground environment as much as the airspace. Unstable structures, debris, rescue operations and the movement of affected communities all influenced where and when the aircraft could be used.
The drone provided CNN with a fast way to establish scale across damaged areas without adding pressure to helicopter resources or requiring large crews to move through already disrupted locations.
