Designing the High-Speed FPV Chase

The King’s Lynn shoot was built around getting the FPV camera as close to the drifting cars as safely possible, matching their speed and movement rather than simply following from above. The flight lines were designed to sit alongside and behind the cars, using low-level tracking and rapid changes of direction to make the viewer feel part of the action.

Drifting creates a very different challenge from conventional vehicle tracking because the cars are constantly changing angle, line and speed. Tyre smoke can also reduce visibility at exactly the moment the aircraft is closest to the subject, so maintaining safe separation, anticipating the driver’s movement and keeping the camera motion smooth all had to happen simultaneously.

The result was a series of close-proximity FPV chase shots that captured the speed, aggression and precision of drifting from a perspective that conventional aerial filming cannot easily achieve.

For motorsport productions, FPV is especially effective when the aim is to communicate speed, proximity and energy — following the vehicle through changes of direction and placing the viewer in positions that conventional camera systems cannot safely or practically achieve.
